Advice and Benefits

Council Tax - What Council Tax is

Council Tax is payable on all domestic property and contributes to the cost of services provided by Swindon Borough Council. It raises over £80 million of the money spent by Swindon Borough Council on local services. The remaining cost is met from business rates, government grants and charges for using services. Details of the total cost of services including police and fire authorities are shown in budget and Council Tax levels.

The amount of Council Tax payable varies according to the value of your home. This is achieved by the Valuation Office Agency (Inland Revenue) placing all domestic property into one of eight bands (A to H).

For further information, please follow the link to Property Bands.

Please follow the link to Council Tax charges to see the amount calculated for each band. Many households do not have to pay the full amount as they qualify for one or more reductions.
